Valencia Orange exported by Egypt
Citrus is the largest crop that produced in Egypt with about 520,000 acres total cultivated area. Its annual Production is about 3.8 million tons, from which around 1.2 million tons are exported. The citrus producing areas in Egypt are concentrated along the Nile River in Beheira (48%), Al Sharqiya (11%), Ismailia (10%), Qalyubia (8%), and Monufia (6%) governorates. Citrus production has increased the last twenty years (around 50% increases) because of the expansion in the reclaimed desert areas. The peak production for these new reclaimed areas is expected to reach its maximum by the year 2020 with 8 million tons approximately produced quantity.
In November 2014, the new exportation season 2017/2018 started for citrus fruits in Egypt. 50% of the Egyptian citrus exports are expected to Export to Saudi Arabia and Russia; the other major importers are the GCC countries, UK, and the Netherlands.
Tariffs are not the main problem for Egyptian citrus exports. The major challenges are transportation costs, distance between competitors and the destination markets, and seasonality of production.
In the last exportation season 2013/2014, the main importers for the Egyptian orange were Saudi Arabia about 250,000 tons, Russia about 238,000 tons, United Arab Emirates about 80,000 tons, Ukraine about 75,000 tons, Iraq about 70,000 tons, England about 68,000 tons, and Netherlands about 57,000 tons.
Valencia orange
is a medium to large fruit with a smooth, finely-textured rind which has thin-skinned and harder to peel. They always picked when fully ripe. The Valencia bright orange fruit has virtually no seeds.
